Can this team do it?
Info from www.PBA.com
Coach Yeng Guiao Thursday made public his official list of players who will comprise the Philippine Team that will try to defend the SEABA championship and gain passage into the FIBA-Asia qualifying tournament for the World Championships.
Named to the team were Ranidel de Ocampo and Arwind Santos of Air21, Willie Miller and Sonny Thoss of Alaska, Barangay Ginebra’s Jayjay Helterbrand, Asi Taulava of Coca-Cola, Purefoods 1-2 punch of Kerby Raymundo and James Yap, this season’s No. 1 overall pick Gabe Norwood of Rain or Shine, Cyrus Baguio of Red Bull, San Miguel’s Mick Pennisi, Kelly Williams and Ryan Reyes of Sta. Lucia and Talk n Text rookie Jared Dillinger.
Except for Santos, Miller, Baguio, Reyes and Dillinger, the rest were members or part of the pool of the previous RP Team coached by Chot Reyes.
Guiao said the team he assembled is blessed with speed, scoring ability and athleticism.
The team has an average ceiling of 6-foot-4.
"It is not as big as I would want it to be. Sana meron nga tayong naturalized players na seven-footers who can match-up with the big players of the Middle East and probably Japan and Korea. But Mick and Asi are here so they can provide us with some size and match up to a certain degree," Guiao said.
"I am very confident of our talent from the point guards to the guards. They are potent players at those positions," he added.
Before going public of his choices, Guiao first revealed his roster to the PBA Board of Governors, who hosted him to a lunch meeting to show their support for the RP Team.
To underscore the seriousness with which people involved in the project are taking the mission, the PBA gave the green light for the all-pro squad to compete in the all-important qualifying competition leading up to the FIBA tournament
"We'll represent the country in the SEABA," Barrios announced in a joint press conference at the league's office in Libis, Quezon City.
With the go-signal, Guiao's team will see action in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association Championship in May 2009, which serves as the qualifying event for the FIBA-Asia tilt.
No venue has yet been set for the SEABA competition, which Chot Reyes' RP team swept last year in Ratchaburi, Thailand en route to clinching a berth in the 2007 FIBA-Asia Olympic qualifier in Tokushima, Japan.
Barrios said they have already informed the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas of the PBA board's decision through vice chairman and PBA Board member Ricky Vargas of Talk 'N Text.
The PBA Board thought it would be best if Guiao and his charges represent the country in that event rather than gamble with a different team.
"The SBP, particularly its president Manny Pangilinan, is very supportive of the PBA," said Barrios.
The SEABA joust will mean adjustment in the PBA calendar, however.
"We still don't know where and when exactly, but it's possible to take a one-week break (during the Fiesta Cup)," Barrios said.
Guiao said he will gather the team over dinner on Monday "to orient (the players), talk about the philosophy of the team, set the objectives and bond together."
Hard work begins on Nov. 24 when the team starts training at the San Juan Arena from 6-9 p.m.
Noticeably out of the team are Jimmy Alapag and Mark Caguioa, both members of the national team that placed ninth in the FIBA-Asia qualifying tournament for a spot in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Guiao said he strongly considered the two but felt Alapag will be a mismatch against big guards while Caguioa's absence in the ongoing KFC PBA Philippine Cup due to injury makes it hard for Guiao to make an assessment of his readiness.
Japhet Aguilar, a 6-10 former Ateneo Blue Eagle now studying at Western Kentucky U, will be arriving in May and is willing to go through a tryout for the team, according to Guiao.
Barrios, who was seated next to Guiao when the RP coach made the announcement, said the team might compete in the Jones Cup and another short tournament in the Middle East as part of its preparations. He said the SBP is also working to host a pocket tournament to provide the team with enough games before it goes to battle.

Recap: MNH 11/10/08
We kinda had a slow night on Monday (11/10). For some odd reason, we only had 8 players come out but we balled hard for 2 hours! Every Monday night from 9-11pm, players know they gotta bring their "GAME" or else they'll get embarrassed. Just ask... I'll stop right there. You guys know who you are.
Ginebra's Macky Escolona & JR Aquino, former CSB standout Lou Abad, Fil-Am guard Kevyn White, BK streetballer/rapper Mike Swift (Swizzle grew up ballin' in Coney Island with Starbury, Sebastian Telfair, & other BK ballers), JR's boy Alex, Ravi Chulani the gym rat, & yours truly made up this week's warriors. We played a half court 4-on-4 best of 7 series. With bragging rights on the table, the series stretched to a grueling 7 games. We played first to 10 by 1's so you know each possession was big. Macky, Ravi, Alex, & Swift made up one team and it was Me, Lou, Kev, & JR on the other side.
Macky was on fire all night knocking down jumpers & taking it to the rim hard. Ravi called himself James Yap for the night & he did play like King James by drilling j's & finishing down low. Down 3 games to 2, my balanced squad found a way to squeak out a game 6 win & with momentum going our way, we took game 7 & this week's right to talk smack.
Since it was the eve of my 30th birthday, i challenged myself to do something fun - run a 17 in less than a minute (running sideline to sideline 17 times). With Kevyn White as the official timer & the rest of the warriors looking on during this momentous occasion, i finished in 59 seconds. Mind you i haven't done a 17 in a while. Happy Birthday to me!
Til next Monday! Hit me up if you got game & want to come ball at MNH. SERIOUS PLAYERS ONLY!

Words & above pic taken from www.pba.ph
At the halfway point of the 2008-2009 KFC PBA Philippine Cup, we have been showered by some of the closest matches we have ever seen. Blowouts seem to be out of fashion and overtimes are the new trend. The teams are so closely matched that the fourth to tenth-ranked teams in the standings are separated by a win.
Many players have jumped out to start the season yet some have stumbled through the blocks.
Let’s give out some awards at the halfway point of the eliminations.
TOP PLAYER OF THE CONFERENCE – Willie Miller (Alaska) 16.8 ppg, 7.7 rpg, (league-best) 5.3 apg, 1.2 spg
You know you are doing something right when your coach says that all your team has to do is to keep it close, and in the end, he expects to win because of you. That is how head coach Tim Cone describes his two-time MVP.
Willie Miller is the top scorer and assist man of the league-leading Alaska Aces. His 7.7 rebounds is also the best number of grabs in his career. His number of dishes ranks No. 1 in the league. He is undoubtedly the best player in one of the top teams in the league. There is a notion that Alaska is a team that can survive losses of individuals because of the system they have in place. You’ll have to say Willie is an exemption to that notion.
Close runner-ups – Gary David, Asi Taulava
TOP ROOKIE OF THE CONFERENCE – Gabe Norwood (Rain or Shine)
Norwood has been almost as good as advertised. He may still lack strength and there is much room for improvement with his shot, but he has been the catalyst for the big turnaround of the Rain or Shine franchise.
His back-court partner has been solid too. Sol Mercado is as fiery as they come… Now if only we can put them together as one… Oh, yes we can. GABE Norwood + Sol MERCADO would make… GABE MERCADO! I guess we better take them individually instead.
NOTABLES – Sol Mercado, Jared Dillinger and Larry Rodriguez
COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE CONFERENCE (MOST IMPROVED)– Gabby Espinas (Red Bull)
After 3 long years, Gabby Espinas finally performs to the level that people thought he could. After languishing in the bench of San Miguel Beer and having peeks on the court with Air21, Espinas has become a double-double guy for Red Bull. There may have been many who thought that the former NCAA MVP would never be able to contribute in the PBA, but leave it to coach Yeng Guiao to see the hidden treasures in his game. And of other unheralded players in the league, for that matter.
NOTABLE – Joe Devance
TOP STAT – Kerby Raymundo (Purefoods) 37 pts (14-24), 11 rebs, 2 asts, 2 stls
Kerby Raymundo fired the conference-best in scoring in their overtime win against Air21 on Halloween. He also managed 11 rebounds to add to his 37 points on a 58% shooting performance. But since it was Halloween, he still had to scare us with his 10 turnovers. Would that be the first triple double of the conference?
NOTABLES – Gary David 36pts vs SMB, Joe Devance 20pts & 20 reb vs Barangay Ginebra and Sol Mercado 29 pts vs Air21 in his pro debut.
TOP TEAM – San Miguel Beer
The new and improved San Miguel team has been playing to their potential. With a looser offense that has given more leeway to their offense, the Beermen have become more exciting to watch and the wins have come alongside with it. New recruits Jay Washington and Mick Pennisi have added a new dimension to the already loaded offense of SMB. Credit head coach Siot Tanquingcen for finding enough minutes for his players and keeping them interested. Don’t the players look more comfortable in the white/red of San Miguel than the blues of Magnolia?
NOTABLE - Alaska
TOP QUESTION – Where is Mark Caguioa?
The PBA’s version of Where’s Waldo. For the second straight Philippine Cup, Mark Caguioa has been unable to join his team to start the conference. Word is that he is nursing an injury and is still in the United States. I am one of those wondering what kind of treatment he is having in the United States that he can’t have it here in Manila. With a disabled team needing offense, people are wondering when the Spark will return to Barangay Ginebra.
TOP HEADLINE – Duremdes is interim coach of Coke
Who would’ve imagined that the former MVP would be coaching a professional team this early in his career? After struggling to book himself a spot in the rotation of Coke, he now personally manages who gets in and out of the rotation.

Hoops Group
The Hoops Group has organized structured runs since 2004. The no nonsense pick up games started at the Brent courts in Pasig then made it's way to various locations such as La Salle Greenhills, RFM, & Reyes Gym. JJ Helterbrand, Norman Black, Asi Taulava, & Samboy Lim are just some of the notable names that have brought their pro game to the runs.
The Hoops Group core, primarily made up of yours truly alongside Matt Maklintal & Ravi Chulani, put up the STEAK Summer Pro-Am in April 2004. That Pro-Am batch produced Ginebra's versatile combo guard, Chris "Mouse" Pacana & Rain or Shine's shifty PG, Don Dulay. The Red Squad composed of veterans Matt Maklintal, Ravi Chulani, Dominic Uy, & Norman Black bagged the first championship crown (*Please note - Ravi & Matt - My 1st place Black team lost when I left for NY before the play-offs). Plans for this year's Pro-Am are currently underway. This year's talent pool will be just as strong if not stronger with a handful of rising Fil-Am prospects & a number of PBA veterans slated to participate.
For now, the Hoops Group will continue to focus on Monday Night Hoops (MNH). MNH is a competitive open run held weekly at the Xavier School gym. From up & coming talents to PBA All-Stars & Legends, the games are organized & have been known to get intense. You never know who's going to show up but you definitely need to bring your A game!

Classics: Like Mike Gatorade commercial
When I was younger, I hated watching Michael Jordan (kill my Knicks) but I loved this commercial. I think it made every basketball fan in America want to drink Gatorade so they could "Be Like Mike." Big shout out to all the OG Jordan lovers out there. You know who you are... I hated you guys too!
Here's some more "Like Mike" love:
I hope this inspires you young ballers out there to work hard like MJ did. It may have looked easy but Jordan worked harder than anyone else on the planet & it paid off during games especially during crunch time. To all my older ballers, lets not hurt ourselves thinking we can still re-enact some of these classic MJ highlights. We had our fair share 20 years ago :)
